Mission

Friends of Adult Day Care support Yolo Adult Day Health Center by fundraising to enhance program services and address participant financial needs.

Yolo Adult Day Health Background

In the early 1970’s, a group of Yolo County residents began looking for a better way of caring for adults whose health problems interfered with their independent living.  The groups’ goal was to help people maintain themselves in the community, prevent deterioration and avoid unnecessary institutionalization.  They were inspired by the geriatric day hospitals (a model of health care) widely used in England.

This group became the Friends of Adult Day Care.  The Friends persuaded Yolo County officials, in the early 1980’s that there was a need for this specialized program in Yolo County.  With the help of Friends, raising the matching funds, Yolo County obtained a special building fund grant. This funding was used to build the first built-to-purposed adult day health center in California.

A community partnership was developed with Yolo County owning the building and the license for the Yolo Adult Day Health Center, the Friends of Adult Day Care, Inc. raising money to help support the Center.  Along with, Eskaton, a not-for-profit health care company providing the daily management of the program.

The Center officially opened in 1984, serving the needs of frail adults in Yolo County.  In 1990, the Center obtained a grant from California, Department of Aging, to operate a Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Center.  This special grant funds the CASA Program  (Caregiver Assistance a Safe Approach). which serves the specialized needs of those with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia related conditions.

In August of 1998, Woodland Healthcare, a Mercy Healthcare affiliate, replaced Eskaton as the program manager.

Now, almost 25 years later, Friends continues to be true to our mission of helping to raising funds to help the Center continue to improve the lives of frail adults in Yolo County.
